Surroundings Peccioli Volterra

Art Prestigious Romanesque parish churches and solitary country chapels stand in the relaxing green of our country. On a hill surrounded by cypresses, in the Chapel of «Santa Caterina» in Legoli, four niches contain valuable frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli dating back to 1479. Where the spontaneous vegetation announces the nearness to the seaside, the Pietracassa fortress with its magnificient features dominates over the hills from its priviliged position. In recent years contemporary works of art have been added to all this, thus enriching the artistic patrimony of Peccioli and Terricciola. This union between ancient and modern embellishes the Valdera offering it an additional reason to be remembered.

The villages of the Alta Valdera
The landscape of the Alta Valdera is characterised by tiny villages, perched on the very top of the hills and rich in witnesses of the medioeval age such as the typical bell towers, narrow allies branching out from the main old stone-paved streets, house façades in fired bricks, arches of the old entrance doors to the centre. In the typical hilly landscape the areas of Chianni, Rivalto and Orciatico distinguish themselves and become almost mountain villages because of their altitude.

Sports facilities
In the «Alta Valdera Park» numerous and well equipped are the areas devoted to the sports activities: from football fields to the gymnastic halls, from tennis courts to athletics tracks, the bike way, the swimming-pools in Chianni and Peccioli up to the last making of the so called «palatenda» (an indoor sports complex) in Peccioli.

Didactic route
In the Alta Valdera there are lots of museums and facilities of scientific and cultural interest such as the Astronomical Observatory in Libbiano (Peccioli), the Zoological Museum in Capannoli and the Prehistoric Park, the Museum of Russian Icons and the Archeological Museum in Peccioli.
